چکیده

ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Behind every success, there is inspiration or support of at least one person. In my case, it was a group of people including my mentor, my family, and my friends. First of all, I would like to thank Dr. Srinath Ekkad for his guidance, wisdom, and financial support. I do not think many advisors would go to the lab to help his student running an experiment. Whenever I had any problem, I knew I could talk to him and he would help me to find a solution. It was no wonder that I started as a Masters student and decided to finish my Ph.D. with him. I was one of his first two students and over the years what Dr. Ekkad would like to say 'grew old together'. Also, we become more like friends and I will cherish this friendship for my whole life. I could not ask for a better mentor. I especially want to thank my lovely wife Lubna for being in the lab with me during all late nights and long weekends. She literally helped me running some of my experiments. Without her love and support all the accomplishment in the world would mean nothing to me. I also must thank all of my lab mates, both past and present. Special thanks go out for their help and valuable suggestions on many occasions. Without their help, it would have been difficult to finish many of my tasks. I also would like to thank them to make my stay in the lab more enjoyable. Last and certainly not least, I have to thank my parents for their unconditional support and encouragement. They played a crucial part throughout my educational journey. Whenever I began to falter, they were there to reassure me and give me the confidence I needed to continue. They made many sacrifices and on many occasions, went beyond their limit to help me. I cannot over emphasize their role in my life and thank them enough. I am lucky to have such wonderful parents. Finally, I would like to thank my brothers, Robin, Shantunu and Rahat for their love and affection.

Effect of Inlet Geometry on the Turbine Blade Tip Region Heat Transfer Coefficient and Effectiveness

An experimental investigation of the local film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient downstream of a row of elongated holes in a simulated axial turbine blade tip is presented. Film cooling is needed to protect the turbine blade tip region from high heat transfer rates, especially when cooling by convection is insufficient to keep the temperature distribution of the blade within ...

Cooling Turbine Blades using Exciting Boundary Layer

The present study is concerned with the effect of exciting boundary layer on cooling process in a gas-turbine blades. The cooling process is numerically investigated. Observations show cooling the first row of moving or stable blades leads to increase their life-time. Results show that minimum temperature in cooling line with exciting boundary layer is lower than without exciting. Using block i...

Computation of heat transfer in a linear turbine cascade

The efficiency of a turbine increases in general with an increase of the temperature of the working gas. In modern turbines this gas temperature may well exceed the melting temperature of the metal walls (Harasgama, 1995). Locally high heat transfer can lead to an excessive temperature and high thermal stresses in the walls, causing an early fatigue of the high pressure turbine components. Thus...

Determination of Casing Convective Heat Transfer Coefficient and Reference Free-stream Temperature in the Tip Clearance Region of an Axial Flow Turbine

The present study explains a steady-state method of measuring convective heat transfer coefficient on the casing of an axial flow turbine. The goal is to develop an accurate steadystate heat transfer method for the comparison of various casing surface and tip designs used for turbine performance improvements. The free-stream reference temperature, especially in the tip gap region of the casing ...

Analysis and Multi-disciplinary Optimization of Internal Coolant Networks in Turbine Blades

This paper presents the theoretical methodology, conceptual demonstration, and validation of a fully automated computer program for the inverse design and optimization of internal convectively cooled three-dimensional axial gas turbine blades. A parametric computer model of the three-dimensional internal cooling network was developed, including the automatic generation of computational grids. A...

Aero-thermal-elasticity-materials Optimization of Cooled Gas Turbine Blades: Part I

The first lecture in this two-lecture sequence provides background and general concepts. The second lecture provides practical examples. The objective of these two lectures is to provide a modular design optimization tool description that will take into account interaction of the hot gas flow-field, heat transfer in the blade material, internal coolant flow-field, stresses and deformations of t...
